Preface from Sally's book, Laughter, My Drug of Choice:
-
According to Webster, medicine is "the art or science of restoring health; any substance used in treating an illness; a remedy." Millions of dollars are spent each year on medicines to both prevent and cure illnesses. It is a scientific fact that when we laugh, the brain releases endorphins into the bloodstream the same way they are released when one takes a drug, like morphine. Therefore, laughter is a natural pain reliever! We can control the dose and it's free.
Life is full of experiences that make us both happy and sad. We learn as we get older that we have little control over our circumstances, but we have total control over the way we react to them. We are each given gifts and it is our responsibility to use these gifts during our lifetime. Some people are given athletic ability, some are given voices like angels, artistic talents, leadership qualities................. and then there are the comedians. These individuals usually stand out in a crowd because they see things in a different light. The truth is they are not that different -- they just look for the humor in situations understanding they can't change things, but they can control the way they get through them.
This book will hopefully help you see that finding humor in difficult situations is not a new idea, it's not rocket science, but it is a prescription for dealing with change and staying sane by "thinking funny" and self medicating.
